As the undisputed star of Dumas’ novel, d’Artagnan quickly gained independence. As early as the 19th century there were many authors who set about imagining new adventures for the dashing musketeer, sometimes involving his family or even his horse (!), with or without his three friends. D’Artagnan, the very personification of courage, duty and a taste for travel, has faced all sorts of challenges, including battles against Cyrano de Bergerac. He has also been placed in detective and espionage plots, and in comics there are countless stories featuring him as the hero, in some cases spanning hundreds of pages and published in magazines bearing his name in France, Argentina and elsewhere.
